Year-End Crunch:
Keep Your Team Energized
Without
Burning Out
Dear Spark Family,
I have no idea how we are already here — 2024 has flown by and we have already made a solid dent in Q4. Here in Colorado the fire-colored leaves are falling, the temperature just dropped, and kids are getting all dressed up in their costumes to trick-or-treat. It feels like we just did this last week! Time is our greatest asset and our greatest challenge, and I find it nowhere more evident than at the end of a calendar year.
Can you feel it? That year-end buzz. You know what I’m talking about: that time of year where we’re pushing hard to wrap up projects, setting goals for next year, and trying to make sure we finish strong. It’s exciting, but let’s be real—it can also feel like a pressure cooker.
This final stretch has a way of testing our endurance. But here’s the truth: leading through the year-end crunch isn’t about tackling everything. It’s about staying focused, keeping our teams energized, and knowing what really deserves our attention. Let me share a few strategies that have kept me grounded (and sane) during crunch time:
1. Zero In on the Big Wins
This is the time to get laser-focused. Not everything can be a top priority—and trying to make it so will only burn everyone out. Step back and ask yourself: What’s going to have the biggest impact if we get it right? When you focus on a few key goals, you’re giving your team direction. Suddenly, they’re not staring down an endless list—they’re working toward something that feels both achievable and meaningful.
2. Communicate Clarity, Not Chaos
Crunch time is when communication matters most. I can’t tell you how many times a quick, clear update has saved us from the “too much to do, too little time” spiral. Be open, be clear, and keep everyone in the loop about what’s critical and what can wait. The more transparent you are, the less your team feels like they’re guessing or scrambling to keep up. And that clarity? It’s fuel for momentum.
3. Encourage Small Breaks
for Big Energy
When deadlines are looming, it’s tempting to want to power through. But here’s what I know: people don’t do their best work when they’re running on fumes. Even a five-minute break, a quick walk, or stepping away for lunch can reset focus. Encourage your team to pause and recharge. We’re in a marathon, not a sprint, and those small breaks make a huge difference in keeping energy up.
4. Celebrate Progress,
No Matter How Small
In the race to the finish, it’s easy to forget to celebrate how far we’ve come. But those small wins? They’re fuel. When you recognize even the smallest accomplishments, it reminds your team that their hard work is paying off. So take a moment—send that quick thank-you, give a shout-out in a meeting, or just let them know you see and appreciate their efforts. Those small moments can recharge motivation when it’s needed most.
